Managua (Agenzia Fides) - "I invite everyone in Nicaragua to take the voluntary national quarantine seriously. Stay at home! Help yourselves! Entrepreneurs, organize a solidarity plan to help the poorest!", with these words Mgr. Silvio José Baez, auxiliary bishop of Managua, who is still in Rome, launches an appeal to the community of his country in the face of the covid pandemic.
According to the note sent to Fides, the Nicaraguan Medical Association and 33 civil associations have convened a national voluntary quarantine of 3 or 4 weeks with the aim of reducing the spread of covid-19 in the face of the lack of measures offered by the government.
"As docotors, we appeal to the people to start a voluntary national quarantine in order to be able to reduce the infections and deaths among the population", reads the statement of the health specialists.
The church, under the guidance of the bishops, have asked to live this "time of responsibility and charity, considering life as a priority". "We need to take care of ourselves and of others", said the bishops.
Until June 2 official figures have registered 1118 cases and 46 deaths, but reality is completely different. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 6/6/2020)
