Port Moresby (Agenzia Fides) - A day of awareness and action, dedicated to the care of the "common home", the protection of environment and the critical use of the mass media: this is the initiative experienced by the young students of the Don Bosco Technological Institute (DBTI) in Boroko, together with the campus staff members, in order to shed light on the current challenges of the environment at a global level. Gabriel Kila, one of the seminar participants, gave a short presentation on how the use of different media can influence the spread of the nature protection message, inducing virtuous or harmful behaviors and choices. The young people agreed on the need to take climate change seriously and "do their part" in the invaluable attempt to save planet Earth.
The awareness campaign was concluded by DBTI resident Councilor Ruby Matane, who, in her concluding remarks, underlined the importance of "taking care of the environment and tackling together the crucial issues of sustainable development, indicated in Laudato Sì, meeting all the needs of humanity".
In line with the encyclical, students have chosen for 2020 the special theme of the year, which will accompany them in every activity: "Time for nature".
The students committed to "bringing about changes in their communities, to bringing about a change in society: only in this way can we actually save our environment from destruction, because the change starts from us", they say.
After a period of closure of the teaching activity, due to the containment measures of Covid-19, in early May, the "Don Bosco Technological Institute" of Boroko reopened its doors to students and teachers.
The institute has adapted to the provisions of the Ministry of Education, implementing all the necessary hygiene and health precautions. For children and teachers, this is a "new normality", which includes rigorous entrance controls, a change in lesson times, temperature measurement and the obligation to frequently wash hands. In any case, the students returned to class, happy and determined to make the most of the year and to complete all the unfinished jobs, to obtain a diploma at the end of the year.
