Margarita (Agenzia Fides) - The "Solidarity Gesture" campaign has managed to distribute food aid to 24 thousand families in many cities of the country. In the area of Margerita and Coche island in Venezuela alone, food was distributed to more than 900 families. "Solidarity Gesture" is a campaign of the Catholic Church which involves missionaries, parishes, Caritas and other Catholic movements to assist the poorest and most vulnerable in this quarantine due to Covid 19.
According to the note sent by the Venezuelan Bishops’ Conference to Fides, the campaign is led by Mgr. Fernando Castro, Bishop of the Diocese of Margarita, and coordinated by Mgr. Ireneo Valbuena, together with priests, religious and Pastoral Social groups from the various parishes in Margarita. After a study to identify the most needy people in the different areas, they distributed 903 food packages across the island directly to people, including: the elderly, single mothers with small children and people with disabilities.
In Venezuela, the health emergency due to Coronavirus has registered 1662 cases with 17 deaths, but these official figures are lower than those reported in the country's press. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 2/6/2020)
