Iquitos (Agenzia Fides) - Good news in the midst of the Covid 19 crisis come from the region of Loreto (Peruvian forest), one of the Peruvian areas most affected by the pandemic. On Sunday 3 May, the Apostolic Vicariate of Iquitos announced that it managed to collect 1,004,030 Peruvian sols in just a few hours, more than double the funds needed for the purchase of an oxygen chamber, which will be destined to patients suffering from coronavirus in the hospital of Iquitos.
According to the note sent by the Peruavian Episcopal Conference (CEP) to Fides, the collection is the result of the campaign promoted by Father Miguel Fuertes, Diocesan Administrator of the Apostolic Vicariate of Iquitos, and by Fr. Raymundo Portelli, parish priest of San Martín de Porres de Iquitos, who invited the population, through social networks, with the aim of reaching the sum of 400,000 soles to purchase the machinery necessary to fill the oxygen cylinders. This is due to the situation that hospitals in that region are experiencing, which have collapsed because of the high demand for patients with Covid-19.
"I want to thank you because the campaign started between 9 and 10 in the morning and we collected at least 750,000 soles, we asked for about 400,000", said Father Fuertes during his mass celebrated at 6 pm yesterday. He also commented that the diocesan administrator of the Apostolic Vicariate of Iquitos is coordinating with the specialists in Lima to finalize the purchase of the oxygen chamber and asked to pray for this initiative to become a reality in the near future.
Loreto is one of the regions of the Peruvian forest most affected by coronavirus: to date it has 1502 patients infected with Covid-19, while 59 people have died. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 5/5/2020)
