Caracas (Agenzia Fides) - In a statement on Monday 23 March, the Venezuelan Episcopal Conference (CEV) recognizes the tireless work of the media, journalists and professionals in this field, who take a leading role in moments of difficulty, being the main informants, but above all the formators of society, as the text of the CEV points out. In times when unproven information abounds, "Fake News" it is only with the word based on truth that one can be light in darkness. In the words of Pope Francis, "the most effective antidote against the virus of lies is letting yourself be purified from truth", recalls the document.
"In these moments in which our country and the whole world need your important work, we ask you: do not be discouraged! Because in the midst of the confusion of the voices and messages that surround us, we need a human narrative". As Pope Francis says: "Even when we inform about evil, we can learn to make room for redemption, we can recognize the dynamism of good in the midst of evil and make room for it", in the last message for 2020 Communications Day.
"The media and journalists as educators and counselors of public opinion have a historical responsibility", reiterates the text. "Only a well-informed public thinks intelligently says an old journalistic saying, the content of which forces us to reflect on the immense responsibility of journalists and the media".
The Bishops’ text refers to the reality of Venezuela: "In the midst of the censorship that exists, it is necessary to make a difference, for this reason social communicators, the media and all those who dedicate themselves to this service must continue to promote the journalism of peace; continue to be bearers of justice, truth and hope".
The document, signed by Mgr. Tulio Ramírez, Auxiliary Bishop of Caracas and President of the Episcopal Commission of Social Communications, sent to Fides by CEV, acquires great importance as the Venezuelan people have a thirst for information on this global health emergency and because in Venezuela, media censorship has been very strong in recent times.
