Seoul (Fides Service) - The archdiocese of Seoul has decided to celebrate a diocesan Eucharistic Congress later this year on Saturday 16 September, the date of the martyrdom of Saint Andrew Kim (1821-1846) the first Korean priest and martyr. Announcing the event Archbishop Nicholas Cheong said “We are sure that by reflecting on the dynamic life of St Andrew Kim Taegon who was obedient to the calling of God for the salvation of the Korean people and nation and witness to the faith through martyrdom our Catholics, young and old, will find new inspiration and impulse for living as authentic Christians.
The Archbishop highlighted the importance of the Eucharist in the life of Saint Andrew urging “every association, organisation and parish in the archdiocese to strive to live out the meaning of the Eucharist in daily life, experiencing the presence of the Lord in the Eucharist, sharing the joy of the Eucharist with others and respecting the dignity of life.”
The Eucharist Congress preparatory committee had a first meeting on February 8 and resolved to encourage the participation of parishes and plan and diffuse suggestions for practical preparatory initiatives. “The congress and its preparation will be an opportunity to assess progress, identify present day challenges and engage with new energy and enthusiasm in evangelisation”, said a priest one of the organisers. Young Catholics, the hope of the world and the Church are expected to attend the Congress in large numbers “since it is from the Eucharist that they receive the mandate to proclaim to the whole world the Gospel of Life.”.
