AFRICA/IVORY COAST - Coronavirus: first case in the Country. The Church: a day of fasting and prayer

Abidjan (Agenzia Fides) - Ivorian Catholics will experience a special day of prayer and fasting on Friday 20 March. This is the decision Ivorian Bishops made at the end of their 115th plenary assembly, held from 9 to 12 March 2020 in Yamoussoukro
"Pope Francis has asked for a day of fasting and prayer, and in a few days we will indicate the day chosen for fasting and prayer so that the Lord can remove this scourge, this pandemic from the world", announced His Exc. Mgr. Ignace Dogbo Bessi, Bishop of Katiola and President of CECI, the Conference of Catholic Bishops of the Ivory Coast.
On 11 March, Ivory Coast registered a first case of coronavirus. A 45-year-old Ivorian who lived in Italy. "The man, according to the press release from the Ministry of Health states that his health condition is "stable and reassuring" and that "the people with whom he entered contact are being followed by doctors".
It is therefore the first confirmed case of coronavirus in Ivory Coast. In late January, a false alarm had affected an Ivorian student from China. Since then, the government has implemented a CFAF 650 million (1 million euro) response plan. (S.S.) (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides, 14/3/2020)
