ASIA/CHINA - Promoting the role of women in the life of the Church: Fei Xiang parish in Hebei organises formation course for women

Han Dan (Fides Service) - To help women play their rightful role in the life of the Church and in the Christian family and to be qualified and effective agents of evangelisation Fei Xiang parish in the diocese of Han Dan, Hebei Province recently organised a formation course for women. Some 210 women attended a five day formation course, many were members of the parish’s St Anne Charity group. At the end of the course they said: “We now know much more about the faith. We are more confident that we can announce to Gospel to the young and to everyone we meet”.
The diocese of Han Dan, which includes 19 civil districts is in the south of Hebei province. There are about 130,000 Catholics in a population of 8.3 million. The area was first evangelised by Italian Jesuit missionary Fr. Matteo Ricci in the 16th century. The diocese was created 1946. At present there are 100 churches and chapels, 41 priests, 40 seminarians and about 200 women religious. The diocese runs several dispensaries, clincs and social assistance structures.
