Kuala Lumpur (Agenzia Fides) - Being more present in Malaysian society with initiatives of charity, human promotion, solidarity development, a sign of closeness to every man and a powerful sign of God's love: with this spirit, the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Malayia, Singapore and Brunei decided to set up Caritas Malaysia, reorganizing and promoting the existing Office for human development existing within the Conference. As learned by Fides, in recent months the Bishops of Malaysia have had a close exchange with the leaders of Caritas International and, after having clarified the organizational and institutional aspects, have decided unanimously to open a national Caritas Office, which encompasses all the dioceses in peninsular Malaysia and those in the territories of Malaysian Borneo, namely Sabah and Sarawak.
The Office will be based in Kuala Lumpur and Bishop Anthony Bernard Paul, at the head of the diocese of Melaka-Johor, has been appointed first president of Caritas Malaysia. The Bishop will invite the representatives of the nine dioceses to a first consultative meeting within the first quarter of the year, to start the coordination work of all the charitable activities already in place and to draw up a Caritas work program for the next few years.
Caritas Malaysia is part of Caritas Internationalis, a confederation of over 160 members, present in almost all the countries in the world. A direct expression of the Catholic Church, Caritas offers concrete help to the poor, the vulnerable and the excluded, regardless of ethnicity, culture and religion, to build a world based on justice and fraternal love.
