EUROPE/ITALY - Virus H5N1 strikes Africa. In the world so far 161 cases of human contagion, 86 mortal

Rome (Fides Service) - Avian flu continues to spread: tests have confirmed cases of infected birds in Africa where the risk of a pandemic is serious. In a joint statement the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation FAO and the World Organisation for Animal Health OIE said they were taking immediate action to block the emergency after cases of contagion among birds were reported in Nigeria.
Since the virus H5N1 first appeared 161 cases of human infection have been reported and 86 were mortal:
2003: 3 cases and 3 deaths, all in Vietnam;
2004: 46 cases 32 deaths: 17 cases and 12 deaths in Thailand, 29 cases and 20 deaths in Vietnam.
2005: 94 cases, 41 mortal: (4 in Cambodia, in China 8 cases 5 mortal, 16 cases 11 mortal in Indonesia, 5 cases 2 mortal in Thailand and 61 cases 19 mortal in Vietnam.
2006: 18 cases 10 mortal: 2 cases both mortal in China, 3 cases all mortal in Indonesia, 1 mortal case in Iraq, 12 cases in Turkey, 4 mortal.
