San José (Agenzia Fides) - "It is up to the Bishops to mark the way and show with their attitudes how synodality is lived", recalled Cardinal José Luis Lacunza, O.A.R. Bishop of the Diocese of David, in Panama, to the Central American Bishops gathered for the 87th Assembly of the Episcopal Secretariat of Central America (SEDAC) which is taking place in Costa Rica in these days. More than 60 Bishops from all over Central America are taking part in the Assembly, from 25 to 29 November at the Casa Siloé, in Heredia, about 25 km north of the capital San José.
The first day, after the greetings from Bishop José Rafael Quirós, Bishop of San José, the works began with the conference on "Synodality", presented by Mgr. Oscar Mario Brown, Bishop Emeritus of Santiago Veraguas, Panama. Yesterday, during the Mass on the second day, Cardinal Lacunza underlined the commitment of the Bishops in bearing witness to synodality: "It is urgent to walk, to propose and take on the responsibilities to overcome clericalism and arbitrary impositions, Synodality is a constitutive dimension of the church, one cannot be a Church without recognizing an effective exercise of the "sensus fidei" of all the people of God".
Although the main theme of the meeting is the reflection on the History of the Church in this part of the continent ("The Church from colonies to independence, lights and shadows"), the agenda includes some themes such as environmental protection, in harmony with the Amazon Synod, and the situation of violence experienced by some communities in Central America.
On this last point the President of CELAM, Mgr. Miguel Cabrejos Vidarte, spoke in his message to SEDAC gathered in assembly: "I join the appeal of the Bishops' Conference of Nicaragua to put an end to all forms of violence and to continue to seek a path of dialogue that allows us to achieve permanent peace". He also reiterated his spiritual closeness to countries experiencing situations of particular concern regarding respect for the fundamental rights of their citizens, as a result of the events of political and social upheaval. This day provides for the sharing of faith experiences before civil society. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 27/11/2019)
