AFRICA/TANZANIA - 700 village children in line to start new Catholic primary schoolin Morogoro

Friday, 10 February 2006

Rome (Fides Service) - A new Catholic primary school in Morogoro, Tanzania, is ready to take 700 village children thanks to the “Helping Children” Foundation which funds programmes of education for children. The aim is to ensure a better future for children who would otherwise be deprived of instruction because of poverty, illness, or physical or mental trauma.
The programme run by Sr Teresa Drago was to build a primary school with 14 classrooms. The school also takes children who because they are over 7 are refused a place at state primary schools.
The school building is ready and the children of Morogoro, 700 children today, but more are expected in the future, are already standing in line in their green uniforms impatient for lessons to start. They will find large clean classrooms, qualified teachers and what is more they will have a meal at school, perhaps the only meal of the day for many.
This primary education will guarantee the children of Morogoro instruction and more healthy growth and more opportunities for the future to enable them to take their rightful place in society in Tanzania. (AP) (10/2/2006 Agenzia Fides; Righe:21; Parole: 260)
