AFRICA/SOUTH SUDAN - Bishops are "Pastors and administrators of God's delicate vineyard"

Juba (Agenzia Fides) - "As Bishops of Sudan and South Sudan we consider the protection of minors a priority and we are committed to working for the prevention of all forms of abuse, atrocities and violence against children. I am glad that, among the many topics, the protection of minors was chosen during this plenary session": said Mgr. Edward Hiiboro, Bishop of Tombura-Yambo and President of the Bishops’ Conference of Sudan, at the conclusion of a recent seminar organized in Juba by the Association of Bishops of the Episcopal Conferences of East Africa (AMECEA), which involved the bishops of Sudan and South Sudan on the establishment of a special Department for the protection of minors.
In addition to the issue of child protection, Bishop Hiiboro indicated that the Plenary Assembly was "for the bishops of Sudan and South Sudan an opportunity to connect primarily with God, the source of their lives; secondly, to reinforce each other as Pastors and administrators of God's delicate vineyard; and to meditate on their mission towards the people of God in the two countries.
The Bishops of both countries, despite the difficulties they are facing, have taken a stand and wanted to act to protect, identify and stop any abuse against children and against the most vulnerable people. "The meeting started with the recommendations of Pope Francis", said the AMECEA child protection official George Thuku, who shared with the bishops the policies and guidelines and priorities set by some of the Bishops' Conferences in the region.
