Thursday, 9 February 2006

Bangkok (Fides Service) - Catholics in Thailand and all over Asia are preparing enthusiastically for an Asian Congress Mission to be held this year in Chiang Mai, Thailand, 19 to 22 October 2006, on the theme: “The History of Jesus Christ in Asia. A Celebration of Faith and Life”, organised by the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences FABC. The Congress is expected to gather over 1,000 participants mainly from Asia but also from other continents and will be a major event for the Church in Asia, an opportunity to reflect on activity for evangelisation in Asia.
During a recent meeting of FABC Secretariat in Bangkok the Congress programme was presented by the organisers. Meanwhile preparation at various level continues with reflection on the chosen topics to be discussed and studied during the Congress.
The Congress participants will fall into three categories: delegates, guests observers. The delegates are people sent officially by the Bishops’ Conference of their respective countries and they will work in close collaboration with the Bishops present. Guests will include prominent members of other Christian confessions or religions. Observers, who may come from anywhere in the world, are people interested in the subject of mission, scholars, teachers, priests, religious or lay people.
In immediate preparation for the Continental Congress the Church in Thailand has organised a National Mission Congress to be held in August this year. The Churches of Asia ask Catholics and other Christians everywhere to pray the Asian Mission Congress may bear lasting fruits and promote knowledge and love of Jesus Christ in Asia.
