Brasilia (Agenzia Fides) - "The absurd fires and other criminal depredations now require an appropriate position and urgent action". This is stated by the Bishops’ Conference of Brazil in the face of the terrible situation that the Amazon forest is experiencing due to the fires that continue without stopping.
The Bishops' document, signed by the presidency of the Bishops' Conference, on behalf of all the bishops and sent to Agenzia Fides, denounces that "there is no more time for political speeches", urging to act promptly and effectively to save the green lung of the planet. The Bishops of Brazil turn to their own authorities: "The Brazilian people, their representatives and their servants have the greatest responsibility for the defense and conservation of the entire Amazon region".
"It is urgent that the governments of the Amazon countries, especially Brazil, take serious measures to save a key region in the planet's ecological balance: the Amazon. This is not the time for discussions on judgments", stress the bishops, inviting them to "raise their voices" and take on a prophetic attitude, taking the example of Pope Francis. In the text the appeal is aimed at all those who occupy positions of responsibility in the economic, political and social fields, saying: "Let us be guardians of creation".
"Let us build together a new social and political order, in the light of the values of the Gospel of Jesus, for the well-being of humanity, of Panamazonia, of Brazilian society, in particular of the poor of this land. It is of fundamental importance to promote and preserve the life in the Amazon and elsewhere in Brazil. We must now raise our voices", concludes the text. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 24/08/2019)
