Halki (Agenzia Fides) - Theological formation and ecological awareness are the main themes around which major representatives of Orthodox theological schools and seminaries, from all over the world, will gather at the third Halki Summit from May 31 and until June 4, hosted by the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, Bartholomew I.
The event will bring together some 50 delegates from over 40 institutions from around the world. The third Halki Summit is organized by an inter-Orthodox working group, now in its third edition, and focuses on the theme of "theological education and ecological awareness", through courses and other programmes related to the protection of creation in Orthodox communities and in Christian educational institutions around the world.
The traditional attention of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and his commitment to the ecological issue and to the safeguarding of creation were expressed in the two previous Summits, held respectively in June 2012 and June 2015. The Patriarch had summoned activists and scientists, journalists and business leaders, theologians and academics, to work across different disciplines. The devastation of nature, the work of God, has always been indicated by Bartholomew I as a consequence of the loss of Christian memory and in particular the role of man in the protection of creation.
The purpose of this meeting promoted by Bartholomew I, is to promote sensitivity and study on issues related to the care of creation, especially in theological institutes, to investigate the theme of safeguarding creation in a theological and spiritual sense and to propose possible solutions to the ecological crisis that threatens today's world.
