Tegucigalpa (Agenzia Fides) - "In all of Latin America and the Caribbean we have witnessed the growth of an ethical, political, economic and cultural crisis. Among these, we highlight the machismo that wounds the dignity of women and migration forced by poverty and violence". This is how CELAM expresses itself in its message to the people of God published on the occasion of its 37th General Assembly, celebrated in Tegucigalpa (Honduras), from 13 to 18 May (see Fides, 13/05/2019).
Faced with this reality, the Bishops reaffirm their commitment to welcoming migrants, and stress the need "to strengthen ourselves in faith and in listening to the Word of God in order to resist the dehumanizing ideologies that prevent the pursuit of the common good, the exercise of freedoms and the recognition of human rights ideologies that often result in sacrificing the poorest people, favoring the increase of inequalities that are unacceptable. We embrace the suffering of the peoples and churches that suffer most today: Venezuela, Nicaragua and Haiti".
In the message, entitled "Walking in faith and in fraternal solidarity", sent to Agenzia Fides, the Bishops reaffirm "their support for Pope Francis and their commitment to address the region's challenges through pastoral work by announcing the Gospel to the new challenges that arise at this time, trying to promote a more just and supportive society, with particular attention to the poor, as a Church that goes forth, that is walking towards the definitive Kingdom".
Aware of their reality as "missionary disciples", the Bishops renew their commitment to fight corruption, which requires a change of mindset, and to take care of the environment, by promoting an integral ecology.
"We renew a radical availability for our beloved people, in particular for the poorest, for women and young people - the Bishops write in conclusion -. We are joyful and believe we are servants of the Gospel of life, eager to gather all of us in our faith communities to strengthen ourselves in the love of God and collaborate in building a more just and supportive society that witnesses the Kingdom".
