Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) - "With gratitude we want to congratulate all the teachers of our country, recognizing their precious daily contribution in shaping an increasingly human, fraternal and supportive culture": this is the beginning of the message of Bishop Enrique Diaz Diaz, Bishop of Irapuato, of the Pastoral Care education and culture office of the Mexican Bishops' Conference, on the occasion of "Teachers' Day", who thanks them calling them "indispensable operators in the daily educational effort in our nation".
"The profoundly human work of a teacher in the classroom can never be replaced" is written in the text sent to Fides, but it is an expression of care, affection and dedication that every human being requires in its path of understanding reality. Every educational center for early childhood, pre-school, primary, secondary, higher, or technological and university, "is a space in which the person is forging his own conception of himself, of his reality, history, of the world and of God, in full freedom and responsibility. Only through an educational journey, which involves dialogue and encounter, does the person discover that he is called to respond to the fundamental questions of life: who am I? How can I be useful to this world? What are my abilities with which I can constantly transform this reality into an increasingly positive and full reality, and therefore achieve happiness? How can one make solid and coherent life choices, faced with the historical reality to be transformed?"
The Bishops therefore call all citizens "to promote solidarity education, hand in hand with every educational institution" and stress: "It is time for prudence, strengthening the rule of law, generating certainty in public decisions, of maximum reflection and transparency on behalf of everyone, as well as solidarity with the most needy". They urge them to take on the great challenges of this time with responsibility, and in particular they turn to parents, "who are the main responsible for the education of children and young people, to commit themselves more and more to school life".
In the conclusion it states that "human, integral, supportive and sustainable development, as emphasized by Pope Francis in his encyclical Laudato Sì, is the only compass that can guide us in our shared journey for the good of all Mexicans and humanity".
According to the last Statistical Yearbook of the Church, in Mexico the Church runs 3,047 nursery schools, 2,436 primary schools, 2,045 secondary schools, and also follows 22,462 university students. (S.L.) (Agenzia Fides, 16/5/2019)
