Tambura (Agenzia Fides) - In South Sudan, because of the civil war that began in 2013, the mortality rate of unborn children and mothers is very high due to the lack of adequate health facilities. The difficult health situation has a strong impact on pregnant women and children: one woman out of 30 risks dying from causes related to pregnancy or childbirth, while one child out of 10 dies before reaching the age of 5. The Catholic Church does not remain indifferent: on the occasion of Easter, Mgr. Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala, Bishop of Tombura-Yambio, President of the Bishops’ Conference which brings together the Bishops of Sudan and South Sudan, officially blessed and launched the project of the new maternity hospital ward of Tambura, realized thanks to a donation from the Italian Bishops' Conference.
In the note sent to Fides Bishop Hiiboro also revealed that the works will start immediately and that all building materials will be purchased in the state of Tambura and that only what is not available in Tambura will be purchased from outside. "When you offer quality health services for women, you support the lives of all human beings because women are the center of every community life", says Mgr. Hiiboro.
This ward will be the second after St. Teresa Nzara hospital, in the diocese of Tambura-Yambio, and will offer health services to the populations of the western equatorial region. (AP) (Agenzia Fides, 3/5/2019)
