ASIA/SOUTH KOREA - Overseas Aid Sunday: Caritas Korea promotes solidarity programmes to fight hunger and malnutrition

Tuesday, 24 January 2006

Seoul (Fides Service) - “If we love God we must also love our neighbour” is the title of a message on the occasion of Overseas Aid Sunday 5 February in Korea organised by the local Church. The message issued by the Korean Bishops’ Commission for Caritas is signed by Commission president Bishop Lazzaro You Heung-sik, Bishop of Daejeon.
“Love is the bond which unites human beings with God, the world and with each other”, the Message says calling on Korean Catholics to be more aware of the growing gap between the rich and the poor of the world and to show concrete concern for people who suffer from hunger and malnutrition.
The message continues: “The world produces enough food for everyone. Yet every day 24,000 die of hunger or hunger connected diseases and over one million people live below the poverty line.” The Bishop says Caritas Korea is committed to supporting programmes to eliminate hunger and poverty, among the Millennium Goals adopted by the United Nations
Caritas Korea has launched a campaign to promote simpler life style, to make people aware of the spreading consumer attitude in the country and to promote more solidarity and sobriety. Caritas urges Catholics to work to promote the common good, following the teaching of Vatican II which called on Christians to practice authentic solidarity so the Church community will offer a useful and effective service in the field of charity.
