AFRICA/SOUTH AFRICA - Resignation of the Archbishop of Pretoria and Military Ordinary of South Africa, and appointment of successor

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - On 30 April 2019, the Holy Father Francis accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Pretoria and of the military ordinariate of South Africa, presented by H.E. Msgr. William Matthew Slattery, O.F.M.
The Pope has appointed as Archbishop of the same metropolitan see and as military ordinary in South Africa H.E. Msgr. Dabula Anton Mpako, currently Bishop of Queenstown.
The Archbishop-elect was born in Eastern Cape, (diocese of Umtata) on 6 September 1959, and was ordained a priest in 1986.
He has served in a number of pastoral roles, including parish assistant, formator and rector of the Saint Paul preparatory seminary in Hammanskraal, rector of the Saint Peter’s philosophical major seminary in Garsfontein, parish priest in various parishes, and vicar forane. Since 2011 he has served as bishop of Queenstown. He is currently vice president of the Episcopal Conference. (SL) (Agenzia Fides, 2/5/2019)
