Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) - From today, April 29th until May 3rd, the Plenary Assembly of the Mexican Bishop’s Conference (CEM) will be held at the headquarters of Casa del Lago in Cuautitlán Izcalli, with the participation of about 150 Bishops. The Assembly will be attended by the Apostolic Nuncio in Mexico, Archbishop Franco Coppola, and a representative of the Conference of Major Superiors of Religious in Mexico (CIRM).
The President of CEM, Mgr. Rogelio Cabrera López, Archbishop of Monterrey, will open the Assembly with a report scheduled at 5:30pm (Mexico time), which will be broadcast live via Facebook under the CEM account: @episcopadomexico
This Plenary Assembly aims to program the Global Pastoral Project in its interaction with the diocesan and provincial plans, through the general guidelines for implementation, addressing various pastoral emergencies of the Church in Mexico: attention to young people, migrants, to priests and to the protection of minors. With regard to the emergency of migration, the Holy Father donated $ 500,000 to support the pastoral work linked to welcoming migrants, which in recent months in Mexico has become a social emergency. In fact, the great flow of Central Americans, but also Cubans and even Africans, who enter the Mexican territory in order to access the United States, in many cases remain in Mexico for a very long time without any support or reference point (see Fides 12/4/20919; 25/04/2019).
According to a statement of CEM, 27 requests for help were received from 16 Mexican dioceses. "Most of the aid will be for migrants' homes, particularly for the dioceses that are on the border, both on the southern border and on the northern border", said President Cabrera López yesterday.
The note sent to Fides by CEM concludes by signaling the entrustment of the Mexican Bishops to Santa Maria de Guadalupe and to the prayer of all the faithful. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 29/04/2019)
