AFRICA/TOGO - Human promotion and evangelization: the Fulani have a well where they can draw water

Kolowaré (Agenzia Fides) - "Everytime the Fulani from the village of Wassarabo came to get water from us, they had to travel four kilometers. Now they finally have a well where can draw water", says to Agenzia Fides Father Silvano Galli, of the Society for African Missions in Togo, explaining that the presence of missionaries in that area also included works of human promotion, alongside pastoral activities and celebration of the Sacraments.
"Wassarabo is a village located about fifteen kilometers from our mission in Kolowaré, on the road to Agolou towards the north. The Fulani, also known by the French term Peul - a nomadic population that on the whole has about 19 million people living in a vast area ranging from Mauritania to Cameroon - regularly came to the mission to ask for a well and a pump to draw water", explains the missionary.
The missionaries, thanks to some donations, were able to start the construction of the well, at the service of the people, many of them Christians, from that village. Fr. Galli continues: "A few weeks ago they presented themselves at the mission bringing 200 thousand francs, about 300 euros: with that sum they wanted to participate in the work". Now life for those populations has changed and the gift of a well generates immense gratitude: "I will never thank you enough for what you have done for us", said the village leader of the Peul village district. In particular, the missionaries conclude, the gift of water refers to many biblical passages in which Jesus is "living water that quenches thirst, a source that quenches thirst".
