Sydney (Fides Service) - The phenomenon of human trafficking and sexual abuse of women and children is an attack on human dignity and a crime against humanity and against God. It must be fought with the involvement of public and private enterprises, civil and religious resources. This was said by a group of congregations of women religious in Australia who have announced vast mobilisation to fight the phenomenon which affects also the newest of the continents.
With contributions of experts and academics the congregations prepared a Report which will be sent to the United Nations and presented to the UN Commission charged with eliminating every form of discrimination against women .
“This is a modern form of slavery”, said Sr Tania De Jong, a member of the Good Shepherd Sisters, one of 15 congregations of women religious which have joined the initiative. “To fight this hateful crime we need to form extended work groups and provide more effective legal support to the victims”, she said.
The Religious call for more commitment on the part of the Australian government, and special government commission to study the matter and reach a better understanding with the help of NGOs, associations and religious communities. (Agenzia Fides 19/1/2006 righe 23 parole 232)
