AFRICA/NIGERIA - Resignation of the Bishop of Ijebu-Ode and appointment of successor

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) – Today Pope Francis has accepted the resignation from the pastoral governance of the Diocese of Ijebu-Ode (Nigeria), presented by His Exc. Mgr. Albert Ayinde Fasina. The Holy Father appointed the Fr. Francis Obafemi Adesina, of the clergy of Osogbo, currently rector of Saints Peter and Paul Seminary in Ibadan as Bishop of Ijebu-Ode.
Fr. Francis Obafemi Adesina was born in Wenchi (Ghana), on January 28, 1964. He has Nigerian citizenship. He completed his philosophical and theological studies at Saints Peter and Paul Seminary in Ibadan. He later obtained a Licentiate in Biblical Theology at the Pontifical Biblical Institute and a Doctorate at the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome. He was ordained a priest on October 14, 1989 for the Diocese of Oyo. Later it was incardinated in the new Diocese of Osogbo.
Since his priestly ordination he has held the following positions: Collaborator at St. Benedict Cathedral, Diocese of Oyo (1989-1990); Collaborator at St. Mary, Ilesa (1990-1992); Parish priest of St. Augustine, Ipetumodu (1992-1994); Chaplain of the Renewal of the Spirit (1992-1996); Director of the Pastoral Center, then Diocese of Oyo (1993-1995); Diocesan Coordinator of the Pastoral Plan (1993-1996); Cappellano, Federal Polytecnic, Ede (1994-1996); Diocesan Secretary, Diocese of Oyo (1994-1996); Studies for a Licentiate in Biblical Theology at the Pontifical Biblical Institute, in Rome (1996-2000), Parish priest of the Cathedral of St. Mary (2000-2002); Formator at the Saints Peter and Paul Seminary, in Ibadan (2001-2009); Director of Art & Culture (2002-2005); Studies for a Doctorate at the Pontifical Urbaniana University, Rome (2005-2009); Dean of Students in Saints Peter and Paul Seminary, in Ibadan (2010-2013); since 2013 Rector of Saints Peter and Paul Seminary, in Ibadan.
