Tuesday, 17 January 2006

Valparaíso (Fides Service) - The third edition of National Days for Social Pastoral care of Children and Adolescents violated in their Rights, organised by the Chilean Bishops commission for Social Pastoral is being held 16 al 18 January Good Shepherd House in Valparaíso Chile. In recent years pastoral care for children has become ever more complex and important. The purpose of the meeting, involving representatives of institutions and dioceses all over the country, is to identify ways to tackle this task and more specifically: take note of the historical perspective of the social situation of children in the 20th century in order to reach a better understanding of the present day picture; study and discuss rules laid down in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and their application in Chile; consider in the light of Church Magisterium and the UN Convention the Chilean Church’s activity with regard to helping children whose rights are violated; make concrete proposals for action.
Conference topics include: “historical analysis of the situation of children in Chile” (Jorge Rojas); “historical view of Church concern for childhood: the context of our commission” (Sr Nelly León, Good Shepherd Sister); “UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in Latin America and Chile: impact, progress and challenges” (a civil society representative); “New laws concerning children violated in their rights: youth penal responsibility law" (Alejandro Gómez, co-ordinator juridical area).
