ASIA/INDONESIA - Resignation of the Archbishop of Medan and appointment of successor

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) – The Holy Farther Francis on 8 December 2018 accepted the renunciation of the pastoral government of Medan (Indonesia), presented by Mons. Anicetus Bongsu Sinaga, O.F.M. Cap. The Holy Father appointed Metropolitan Archbishop of Medan Friar Kornelius Sipayung, O.F.M. Cap., until now Provincial Minister of Medan.
The new Archbishop was born on 26 August 1970 at Bandar Hinalang-Kabanjahe, Region of North Sumatra, Archdiocese of Medan. After attending Christus Sacerdos Minor Seminary in Pematangsiantar, he continued his studies in philosophy and theology at St. John High School in Pematangsiantar. He made his perpetual vows on 22 August 1998. He was ordained a priest 11 December 1999.
He then served as follows: 1999-2002: parish priest at Our Lady of the Assumption in Kabanjahe, Medan; 2002-2005: Studies for a License in Dogmatic Theology at the Gregorian University in Rome; he then studied English for six months in Brisbane, Australia;
2005-2015: Formator of Capuchin Seminarians in Pamatangsiantar; Docent of various subjects at St. John High School in Pematangsiantar; 2012-2015: Guardian at Pematangsiantar; Provincial Vice-Minister of Medan;since 2015: Provincial Minister, re-elected in 2018 for a further mandate until 2021.
He was also part of the Collaboration Group of Indonesian Capuchins comprising representatives of the two provinces of Medan and Pontianak, and the two Custodies of Sibolga and Nias. He is also part of the Asia-Pacific Capuchin Conference. At the national level he is a member of the Bishops Conference’s Theological Commission; at the diocesan level, he is part of the Council of Presbyters and Administrator of the Harapan Jaya Foundation and the Caritas.
