Jalandhar (Fides Service) - At a time of tension and attacks on Christians in various parts of India, there are also positive initiatives which show that harmony among people of different religions is possible and is lived and experienced in many parts of the country.
One example comes from Jalandhar, in the north western state of Punjab. The city decided to rename one of its squares Square of the Lord Jesus Christ. Dedicating a public square to a religion professed by a small minority of citizens the city authorities said they wished to express general appreciation for Christians’ contribution towards promoting social harmony and their disinterested service to all citizens regardless of social status or religion.
Events organised for the Christmas Season by Christians of several different confessions were attended by civil leaders and ordinary citizens, including many non Christians, anxious to show solidarity with Christians on the occasion of the important feast .
The Bishop of Jalandhar, Bishop Symphorian Keeprath in a public statement thanked the civil authorities for their attitude of openness and understanding which he said helps build an atmosphere of peace and harmony. In a message to the city council the Bishop explained that the intentions of the Christian community were peaceful and constructive: “Jesus Christ came into the world, to heal a world divided by hatred and prejudice. The Lord Jesus Christ teaches that it is possible to forgive if we make God’s love our own”. (Agenzia Fides 12/1/2006 righe 24 parole 246)
