ASIA/PHILIPPINES - The Philippines is getting ready for "The Year of Youth"

Manila (Agenzia Fides) - 2019 will be "the Year of Youth" in the Philippines: reports the Episcopal Conference of the Philippines, in continuity with the contents of the Synod of Bishops, which is underway in the Vatican. As reported to Fides by the Episcopal Commission for Youth, the special "Year of Youth 2019" officially begins with the feast of Christ the King, November 25, 2018, but the solemn opening ceremony will be on December 2 in Manila.
The Commission has invited its network of 86 diocesan youth ministry leaders and leaders of national youth organizations to "take part in the general organization and to give their contribution, including the creation of the official logo and theme song", says to Fides Eva Mae Famillaran Palmero, a young Catholic.
"The celebration of the Year of Youth will be an occasion for experience, sharing, prayer, proclamation of God's love for others. It will be an opportunity to become more firm in faith", Jovanie Bacolcol, leader and youth animator, tells Fides.
The Year of Youth is part of the multi-year path traced by the Catholic Church in the Philippines in preparation for 2021, the 500th anniversary of the arrival of the Gospel in the Philippines (1521-2021). Each year has been dedicated to a specific theme. 2018 was the year of the clergy and of the consecrated.
In 1521 the indigenous Rajah Humabon and Hara Amihan were the first two baptized Filipinos, and they were given the names of Carlos and Juana. The Spanish missionaries brought the Christian faith to the Philippines 500 years ago and today the nation is the nation with the largest Catholic population in Asia.
