Lome (Agenzia Fides) - In Togo we need "a concrete and effective accompaniment of young Catholics on behalf of priests", as well as a "strengthening of youth pastoral care". As reported to Fides, these are some of the recommendations identified by the young Catholics of Togo on the occasion of the Synod on Youth - underway in Rome from 3-28 October - and reported in an open letter to Pope Francis in which they make several observations.
Through this initiative, promoted by the Coordinating Council of Catholic Youth Action (CCACJ) of the Diocese of Lomé, "the young people wanted to thank the Holy Father for having convened this meeting and to communicate the expectations of young people in Lomè on the religious, social, economic and political level", says Father Silvano Galli, priest of the Society for African Missions in Sokodè to Fides.
"Furthermore, Father Galli continues, the social factor is added to the religious factor. The young Togolese call for "a system of promotion that foresees the professional integration of young Catholics". For example, they referred to the Institute for the Works of Religion, hoping for the creation of a fund to finance youth initiatives on all continents.
"It is necessary that the current Synod leads to concrete resolutions for the social and economic development of young Catholics", they also state in their letter: Young people also add the request that the Catholic Church finds a formula to encourage "the civic engagement of young people, especially in those parts of the world where the problems of good governance and democracy are particularly serious".
