Abuja (Agenzia Fides) - "It was an attempted robbery which ended badly", says to Agenzia Fides Fr. Patrick Tor Alumuku, Director of the Social Communications Office of the Archdiocese of Abuja, reporting the circumstances of the killing of Fr. Jude Egbom who was shot dead on the evening of 10 September in Umuwala, in the State of Imo in southern Nigeria. (see Fides 12/9/2018).
"Fr. Egbom was at the barber’s when some bandits entered. We do not know what happened but at some point the criminals fired some shots, killing the priest and seriously injured a seminarian who was with him", says Fr. Patrick. "What is striking is the total lack of respect for human life", emphasizes the priest.
Fr. Patrick concludes by reporting that "it is not yet known when the funeral of Fr. Juge will take place because the Bishops and also the Ordinary of the diocese of Orlu, Augustine Tochukwu Ukwuoma are at a meeting in Sokoto this week".
Fr. Jude Egbom was a parish priest at St Patrick's Parish Amucha.
A few hours after the murder of the Catholic priest, another serious incident occurred in the State of Imo. Some criminals shot dead an army sergeant on guard at a roadblock near Assumpta Catholic Church, the Catholic Cathedral of Owerri, capital of the State of Imo. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides, 13/9/2018)
