Madrid (Agenzia Fides) – Fr. Anastasio Gil, National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) of Spain, died today in Madrid. He was known as a tireless missionary and man of God. Anastasio Gil García was born on 11 January 1946 in Veganzones (Segovia). He was ordained a priest at the age of 24 in the diocese of Segovia. In 1983 he was incardinated in the diocese of Madrid. Graduated in Theology at the University of Comillas in 1970, he then obtained a Diploma in Educational Psychology in 1972, and a Doctorate in Theology at the University of Navarre, in 1981.
In 1999 he was appointed director of the Secretariat of the Episcopal Commission of the Missions and of the cooperation between the Churches of the Spanish Episcopal Conference. In 2011 he was appointed National Director of the PMS, a position confirmed in 2016, and which he maintained until the end of his days, despite his illness. Fr. Anastasio gave a special contribution to the ongoing formation of missionaries, through Courses and Seminars promoted by CIAM.
