Lima (Agenzia Fides) - In the face of the worrying situation of moral crisis in Peru due to corruption within the judicial system (see Fides 25/07/2018), the Bishops, gathered for the plenary assembly of the Episcopal Conference, have published a message to the Peruvian people with an invitation to renew hope, while they underline some aspects of the crisis and propose measures to overcome it.
"We suffer a political, judicial, economic and social corruption, due to the ethical decomposition caused by the abandonment of Christian ideals, and by the deformation and anesthetization of consciences. We therefore ask all men of good will to make a sincere examination of conscience, which allows them to act in different areas of their conduct, respecting truth and transparency and rejecting corruption. We are all called to this conversion", reads the beginning of the message sent to Agenzia Fides.
The Bishops call for a decisive confrontation with the phenomenon of corruption: "All Peruvians must be aware of the need to join forces, to firmly face the corruption that occurs in the administration of justice".
They also propose a serious reflection on the upcoming elections: "Faced with the upcoming regional and municipal elections on October 7, we would like to recall that the Church appreciates the system of democracy, insofar as it ensures the participation of citizens in political decisions and guarantees the possibility to elect and control their rulers, or to replace them promptly in a peaceful way. Our Country must be governed by good and true politicians, so we invite you to seriously take into consederation and, according to Christian values, our participation in political life".
Finally, in their message the Peruvian Bishops expressed their views on Venezuelan migrants and the problem of abuses in the Church, stating that "the situation of our immigrant brothers is also a matter of concern for us. Our attitude towards them must be human and truly Christian". Regarding the deplorable argument of abuses in the Church, they mention Pope Francis’ recent Letter to the People of God, which reads: I am conscious of the effort and work being carried out in various parts of the world to come up with the necessary means to ensure the safety and protection of the integrity of children and of vulnerable adults, as well as implementing zero tolerance and ways of making all those who perpetrate or cover up these crimes accountable" (n.2).
