Managua (Agenzia Fides) - The UN Security Council yesterday, September 5, discussed the situation in Nicaragua, at the request of the United States, despite the opposition of China, Russia, Bolivia and Ethiopia, that do not consider the situation in that country a threat to international peace. "The situation of death, violence, repression, political crisis and social crisis in Nicaragua is a matter of extreme concern in the western hemisphere", declared the Head of the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OSA) to the Security Council, which, he underlined, monitors the situation in the country on a permanent basis. Gonzalo Koncke noted that since 18 April, 322 people have died in the Central American country, according to data provided by the Inter-American Commission for Human Rights.
The theme was proposed when last weekend, the Nicaraguan government expelled the UN delegation from the country, which the Archbishop of Managua, Cardinal Leopoldo Brenes, publicly criticized. According to a note sent by a Fides source in Nicaragua, Cardinal Brenes described the expulsion of the UN delegation as "sad and deplorable", which had arrived at the end of June to contribute to a peaceful solution to the socio-political crisis. Mgr. Silvio José Báez, Auxiliary Bishop of Managua, in a message through Twitter, commented: "My warmest congratulations to the men and women of the press in our country who, with their noble work, contribute in an exceptional way to the emergence of a just and democratic society".
