Bangui (Agenzia Fides) - Firm condemnation by the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) for the assassination of the Vicar General of Bambari, Mgr. Firmin Gbagoua, killed on 29 June (see Fides 3/7/2018). During the weekly press conference of MINUSCA in Bangui, the spokesperson of the UN mission, Ms. Uwolowulakana Ikavi-Gbétanou, reaffirmed MINUSCA's commitment to provide support to the government structures of Central Africa so that "criminals can be prosecuted and severely punished for this cowardly and shameful crime.
"In the name of the Mission, the spokesman also warned against any attempt to instigate violence to the population, fueling religious and community tensions.
The violent fighting has caused, in addition to deaths and injuries among civilians, the flight of the population and the destruction of several houses, looted and set on fire.
MINUSCA and local authorities have met armed groups to end the fighting. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides, 5/7/2018)
