AFRICA/ANGOLA - Appointment of the Bishop of Cabinda

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) – Today the Holy Father has appointed Fr. Belmiro Cuica Chissengueti, C.S.Sp., currently Provincial Superior of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit in Angola, as Bishop of the diocese of Cabinda (Angola).
The new Bishop was born in the Province of Bié, Central Angola, on March 5, 1969. He entered the preparatory Seminary of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (Spiritan Fathers) in Lândana, Cabinda, he studied philosophy and theology in Christ the King Major Seminary in Huambo, he made his perpetual vows on August 5, 1995. He was ordained a priest on May 5, 1996.
He later studied Civil Law at the Catholic University of Angola, obtained a Licentiate at the Pablo de Olavid University in Spain, and spent an apprenticeship at the Bar Association of the Country. Since his priestly ordination he has held the following positions: 1996-2000: Parish vicar and then parish priest of São João Baptista in Lobita in the diocese of Benguela; Member of the presbyteral Council of the same diocese; 1997-2004: Director of the Province of the Spiritan Fathers in Angola; 2000-2016: Parish priest of São Pedro Apóstolo in Luanda; 2001-2009: Episcopal Vicar of the Archdiocese of Luanda for Social Pastoral Care; 2002-2003: Member of the Presbyteral Council of the Archdiocese of Luanda; 2004-2013: First Counselor of the Province of the Spiritan Fathers in Angola; 2010-2014: Secretary of the Episcopal Commission of CEAST for Justice and Peace; since 2010 Episcopal Vicar of the Vicariate of São Pedro; since 2013 Member of the Ecclesiastical Court of the Archdiocese of Luanda; since 2016 Provincial Superior of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit in Angola.
