Caracas (Agenzia Fides) - "We greatly appreciate the work of the journalist, his mission is not only to inform, but to highlight the human and transcendent values that in the field of journalism should be highlighted, in particular by providing truthful, appropriate and accurate information and with a content of hope": says the statement by the Episcopal Conference of Venezuela (CEV) sent to Agenzia Fides. Every year, the National Day of Journalists is celebrated in Venezuela on 27 June, to commemorate the publication of the first newspaper in the country, called "Correo del Orinoco".
"To celebrate Journalist Day - continues the Bishops' text - in the current situation that Venezuela is experiencing, is an invitation to demonstrate with commitment and dedication what this praiseworthy profession does in the midst of difficulties, to inform. Free and responsible voice is fundamental for the growth of any society that wants to be called democratic. Society needs that the right to information is scrupulously respected, together with the right to the dignity of every human being involved in the information process".
"It is necessary - they add - to build journalism, even in the most difficult moments, on the pillars of love for truth, professionalism and respect for human dignity, a journalism that overcomes slogans and ideologies and always puts the person at the center of news and its dignity, a journalism with information without partial interests and which build, day after day, paths of integration ... Therefore, in every moment, a journalism that urges human truth and dignity is urgent", concludes the statement of the CEV.
The socio-political situation in Venezuela, according to "Reporteros Sin Fronteras", is terrible: journalists are persecuted and threatened, there is not an exact amount of physical attacks against them, but they exceed 500 cases in 2017 alone. In almost all these cases, they are carried out by the security forces and the Bolivarian National Guard. The National Telecommunications Commission (Conatel) continues to close the media. Only in 2017, Conatel silenced more than 41 radio and TV channels. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 28/06/2018)
