AMERICA - Scalabrinians: instead of inhumane migratory policies, look for suitable alternatives that respect dignity

Brasilia (Agenzia Fides) - "We Missionaries of St. Charles Borromeo/Scalabrinians, with the mission to follow migrants and refugees, worried and committed to accompanying our migrant and refugee brothers and sisters on the journey and in migration processes, join the voice of Churches, civil organizations and international organizations in the face of inhumane migration policies that president Trump and his government have taken". This is what a series of Scalabrinian organizations operating above all in Latin America state in a note sent to Fides: the Association of the Scalabrinian nuns of Tegucigalpa (Honduras); Assmi, Scalabrinian Association of Service to the migrants of San José (Costa Rica); Smr, the Migrant and Refugee Service of Mexico City (Mexico); Father Giuseppe Marchetti of Jalisco civic Association (Mexico); Ascala, Scalabrinian Association at the service of human mobility in San Pedro de Macoris (Dominican Republic); the Civic Association of Tijuana (Mexico); the Scalabrinian Mission of Quito (Ecuador); the Imdh, the Human Rights Institute of Brasilia (Brazil); CSEM, Scalabrinian Center for Migratory Studies in Brasilia (Brazil); Ascm, the Scalabrinian Association with the migrants in Rome (Italy); Assmi, Scalabrinian Association at the service for/with the migrants in Rome (Italy) and the "Porta sul mondo" Association of Piacenza (Italy).
"They have exceeded the tolerable - the signatories add - with the use of children and migrant adolescents as a currency to implement the 'zero tolerance policy' that has reached the extreme, without ethics and without morals. If there is something for which today we raise our voices and unite with those of all the other organizations, Churches, movements and international organizations that have preceded us with their denunciation, it is because we ask for human respect, and that promotes the superior right of protection of the child and adolescent".
The document calls for the unification of families; respect for international law and international treaties that support, protect and promote the rights of children and adolescents; the countries of origin are asked to stop the laxity on development policies so that people are not forced to migrate in the conditions in which they emigrate today.
"We urge to consider the causes that force families to flee desperately with their children and adolescents - continues the note -, these are already traumatic, adding also the harsh conditions of the journey they undertake.
We invite you to look for human and appropriate alternatives. We condemn arrests, detentions, criminalization and immediate deportations involving children, because this will traumatize them for the rest of their lives".
"As Scalabrinian Missionary Sisters - concludes the note -, we invite you to meet the Jesus of Nazareth who becomes a Child and presents himself as small, vulnerable, fragile and requires from us, care, protection, custody, protection, promotion and integration as recommended by Pope Francis".
