AMERICA/MEXICO - Migration, Multicultural situation and Pastoral and Culture: 3rd national Congress January 2006 organised by Mexican Bishops’ Commission for Culture

Mexico City (Fides Service) - The Catholic Bishops of Mexico are promoting a National Congress on Migration, Multicultural Society and Pastoral and Culture in order to launch a process of pastoral sensitisation and commitment taking into consideration the vast phenomenon of migration and the emerging multicultural society and render possible to urgent task of inculturation of the Gospel. The congress, organised by the Bishops’ Commission for Culture, will be held 24-26 January 2006 at the Auditorium of the Intercontinental University in Mexico City. The Congress is open to diocesan delegates for pastoral care of culture and of human mobility, and individuals and groups interested in dialogue of faith and culture attention for migrants, civil society bodies and the university world.
The daily programme will include a general conference by Cardinal Paul Poupard President of the Pontifical Council for Culture; and conferences by Robert Schreiter professor of Theology at Nijmegen University in Holland and other speakers on issues identified in preparation for the congress. Plenary meetings will give participants a chance to engage in critical and constructive discussion.
Tuesday 24 January Cardinal Norberto Riversa Carrera, Archbishop Primate of Mexico and chairman of the Bishops’ Commission for Culture will give the opening address. The first general conference by Cardinal Poupard on Migration and migrants in times of globalisation will be followed by various talks: Schreiter on the theme “towards an ecclesiology of migrations”; Prof. Meir Bunytow Damsky on “Israel, migrant people par excellence”. The morning will close talks by Fernando Pérez, head of the department for political and social sciences the National Independent University of Mexico, and Archbishop Rodendo Huesca Pacheco of Puebla on Mexican realities discussed previously.
Wednesday 25, reflection will focus on: “Pastoral care for culture and the challenges of a multicultural society”; “Resuming our journey starting from Christ. The Christological basis for pastoral of culture in the multicultural and intercultural society of today”; “the new face of pastoral of culture”; “specific duties of Pastoral of Culture in a multicultural society”.
Thursday 26 reflections will consider: “Multicultural society, challenges and opportunities”; “Multicultural, Intercultural and Catholicity” (towards a multicultural Church); “Multicultural Intercultural: situations and challenges for the Church in Mexico”; “proclaiming the Gospel in a multicultural”.
