EUROPE/ITALY - Conference to mark the 100th anniversary of Saint Pope Pius X’s “Compendium of Catholic Doctrine”

Thursday, 15 December 2005

Riese Pio X (Fides Service) - In 1905 Pope Pius X presented Rome diocese with a “Compendio della Dottrina Cristiana”, known as “the Catechism of Pius X”. It consisted of a series of simply worded questions and answers to help Catholics assimilate the teaching of the Church. The booklet, which was great success and gave generations of Christians “basic theological knowledge”, presented an evident personal contribution of Pope Sarto who always gave particular attention to the Christian education of the people of God. While still a parish priest in Salzano (VE) he wrote a catechism which can be considered a draft of the one issued in 1905. A hundred years since the publication of the Catechism of Pius X and in the same year in which the new Compendium of the Catholic Church was made public, the Fondazione Sarto, the city council, the parish and the tourist office of Riese Pio X, where the Pope was born, have organised a Conference on Friday 16 December at 7pm with the presence of Bishop Rino Fisichella, rector of the Pontifical Lateran University.
