ASIA/SRI LANKA - Resignation of Auxiliary Bishop of Colombo Appointment of new Auxiliary Bishop

Città del Vaticano (Agenzia Fides) – The Holy Father Pope Francis on 4 April 2018 accepted the renunciation of the office of Auxiliary Bishop of Colombo (Sri Lanka), presented by Bishop Vincent Marius Joseph Peiris. The Holy Father appointed auxiliary Bishop of the same metropolitan See, Rev Jayakody Aratchige Anton Jayakody, of the clergy of Colombo, until now episcopal Vicar for priestly formation and Rector of St. John Mary Vianney archdiocesan seminary assigning to him the Titular See of Mulli.
The new Bishop was born on 2 October 1958, in Pamunugama, archdiocese of Colombo. In 1975 he entered St. Aloysius Minor Seminary in Colombo. In 1977 he entered the propaedeutic Seminary and the following year commenced his studies in philosophy at the National Seminary of Our Lady of Lanka, in Kandy. On completing his studies he was then ordained a priest on 27 July 1985, for the clergy of the same metropolitan see.
He has since served as follows: (1985-1986) Staff member propaedeutic seminary, Kalutara; (1986-1987) Parish priest at Wewala; (1987-1990) Staff member at the propaedeutic seminary, Kalutara; (1990-1991) Parish priest at Pannipitiya; (1991-1993) higher studies in Rome (residing at the Pontifical College San Paolo); (1993 – 1995) Bursar at the national seminary Kandy; (1995-1996) parish priest at Halpe; (1996-1998) Parish priest Welivita; (1998-2003) Formation expert at Kandy national seminary; (2003-2005) Director of the Philosophy Section at Kandy national seminary; (2005-2011) Rector at the Kandy national seminary; since 2011 episcopal Vicar for Priestly Formation in the archdiocese and Rector of St. John Mary Vianney Seminary, for adult vocations.
