Cusco (Agenzia Fides) - "Christian initiation requires young people to be educators in faith, because we are experiencing a moment of crisis in educational institutions such as parishes, families or schools. This is why we call young people to take on this responsibility, this service, this mission of educating in faith". This is what was expressed by Mgr. Fredi Aparicio Quispe, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Cusco, responsible for the Christian Initiation Commission, who organized the "First Week of Formation of, catechists", in the Deanery of St Antonio Abad, in the Archdiocese of Cusco, Peru.
The meeting, which sees a massive participation of young pastoral workers from various parishes of the Archdiocese, aims to offer all catechists a space for formation and reflection on Christian initiation. In this week of formation, which began Monday 5 and will end on Friday 9 March, under the theme: "The process of initiation within the pastoral plan", will try to "help young catechists in their process of learning and formation - explains the Vicar to Fides -, so that they can have all the doctrinal, methodological and biblical elements to adequately carry out catechesis during the year". Because even if young people prepare themselves individually in their respective parishes, "we have observed the absence of a formative process, so we want to gradually implement an itinerary of formation for catechists".
Mgr. Fredi Aparicio continues: "The novelty is the methodology and accompaniment, because Jesus is always at the center in catechesis, but what changes is the form. For example, traditional catechesis emphasizes the theme of memorizing doctrinal contents with a system of questions and answers, while Christian initiation tries to ensure that young people and children live experiences of meeting Jesus so that they can become his followers". "The fruits are abundant and wonderful - concludes the Vicar -, the young people who previously participated in similar activities, have returned with much more courage, and the tools provided, such as the methodology and the doctrinal contents, have helped them to work with the their children and adolescents, and at the same time to grow as followers of Jesus and as people".
