AFRICA/GUINEA - Peace efforts after the clashes at the border for a gold mine

Conakry (Agenzia Fides) – There is a joint initiative of reconciliation of Mali and the Republic of Guinea on the common border to appease the spirits after the serious incidents of 26 and 27 November in which a dozen people lost their lives.
The Minister of the Territory of Guinea, Bouréma Condé and his counterpart from Mali, Tiéman Hubert Koulibaly, went to the area to underline the close relations of collaboration and friendship between the two nations.
According to news sent to Fides, between 26 and 27 November some Malian miners, backed by policemen and hunters, attacked Guinean miners of a gold mine at the border between the two Countries. The response of the villagers resulted in six deaths: two Guineans and six Malians, including a policeman. The Malian authorities replied that some Guineans attacked the Malian side of the border and ambushed a patrol of their policemen.
The Ministers of the two States, on behalf of their respective Presidents, underlined the need to demarcate the border in order to avoid the repetition of similar incidents. The populations of
Balandougou in Guinea and Gnaouléni in Mali claim possession of the same gold mine. The fact that the central administrations of the two States have committed themselves to defining the border by mutual agreement should finally calm the people down.
Both Guinea and Mali are going through strong social and security tensions, due to the presence, in particular in Mali, of jihadist groups. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides, 7/12/2017)
