Harare (Agenzia Fides) - "Popular joy exploded with regards to the news of the resignation of Robert Mugabe", says to Agenzia Fides Fratel Alfonce Kugwa, National Coordinator of the Social Communication Committee of the Bishops' Conference of Zimbabwe. 93-year-old President Robert Mugabe resigned after days of hard confrontation with his party's leadership, the ZANU-PF, and the army that had taken control of the capital Harare. "It was an unexpected development", says Fratel Alfonce.
On November 24, Emmerson Mnangagwa, Zimbabwe's former vice president is scheduled to be sworn in as the country's interim leader, announced today Parliament Speaker Jacob Mudenda.
Zimbabwe turns page, but at this point it is still early to understand which direction the Country will take. Fratel Alfonso stresses that the people want to improve the economic conditions and to gain access to true democracy. "For the future we expect a clear improvement in the country's economic conditions and greater political stability", he says. "We hope in the immediate end of the climate of violence and terror. People lived in fear", continues the National Coordinator of Social Communications of Bishops.
"Everyone has the hope that the new political system that will be formed in the post-Mugabe era will bring real development opportunities, especially for younger generations", he concludes.
The bad economic management of Mugabe’s regime over the last 20 years has destroyed the national agricultural system, one of the most prosperous in southern Africa, forcing millions of citizens to emigrate to South Africa or to more remote locations. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides, 22/11/2017)
