ASIA/TURKEY - “Hate News” in the Turkish media and incitement to hatred increases. Jews, Armenians and Syrians in the crosshairs

Istanbul (Agenzia Fides) - In the Turkish, paper and digital, media "Hate News" and acts that express contempt and incitement to hatred towards individuals and groups identified on a national, ethnic or religious basis are increasing rapidly. Jews, Syrians and Armenians are among the most affected groups.
According to a report released by the Hrant Dink Foundation, which since 2009 carries out investigations on expressions of religious hatred and racism that appear in the Turkish media. According to the Foundation, that bears the name of Turkish Armenian journalist assassinated in 2007, in the period May to August 2017, the Turkish media reported 2466 hate speech against 48 different groups. In addition to Jews, Syrians, and Armenians, Greeks in Turkey have also become targets of "hate News". According to the newspaper "Agos", the Armenian-Turkish bilingual newspaper published in Istanbul, the Hrant Dink Foundation's report points out that often in some Turkish media the word "Jew" is used as an insult.
