While World Day of the Poor is celebrated on November 19, India, the world's largest democracy, is facing the economic and social effects of a controversial measure adopted by the government of Narendra Modi a year ago: demonetization, that is, the sudden devaluation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. Today analysts note that the government’s programmes do not really benefit the poor and do not have a positive impact on the overall socio-economic welfare of society. Demonetization is considered a wrong move. In order to empower the poor and accompany them to full development, the government must focus on inclusive growth through policy proposals, tools and programs that help alleviate poverty and enable disadvantaged people to find new opportunities.
