Cairo (Agenzia Fides) - Egypt's presidential elections are scheduled for 2018, but Egyptian intellectuals and public figures have already begun promoting press and social media campaigns to re-elect President Abdel Fattah al Sisi for a second term. The promoters of the campaign titled, "We stand with you for Egypt", have recently aimed to gather support statements from members of the local Churches. Coptic Bishop Jeremiah, in charge of the Coptic Cultural Center, praised the initiative as a useful tool to highlight the works and contribution offered by President al Sisi to the country’s stabilization, is among those who undersigned the appeal. The organizers of the campaign also contacted Anba Antonios Aziz Mina, Catholic Coptic Bishop of Guizeh, who issued a statement in which he recalled, among other things, that al Sisi was the first Egyptian President to visit the Orthodox Coptic cathedral on the occasion of the Christmas celebration. Among other exponents of ecclesial communities involved in the pro-Sisi campaign there are also Evangelical Reverend Sami Ayad, professor of theology, and Dr. Ikram Lamai, at the head of the Council of the Evangelical Church.
