Friday, 2 December 2005

Merida Yucatan (Fides Service) - Among the activities of the 13th national mission congress taking place in Mérida Yucatán, was a Mission Exhibition at Yucatán Siglo XXI Centre. The main objective of the exhibition open to the public free of charge is to inform people about the missionary work of missionary institutes and congregations and promote reflection on the missionary duty of every baptised Christian.
In the section on the Pontifical Mission Societies there is an interesting graphic path of the history of the missions starting with Jesus Christ down to His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI. Comboni missionaries have a stand with objects from mission lands which allow the public to a certain extent to know more closely the nations where ad gentes missionaries operate: statues of ebony, African war shields, skins of giant snakes, photographs of daily life… cassettes on native customs and music. Yucatán archdiocesan Pastoral care for the Maya exhibits the crafts of this land of the Mayab, in wood, textiles, ceramics etc.
The exhibition includes stands of 40 different Missionary Congregations, Guadalupe, Vincenziani, Xaverian, Lay Missionary Institute, Missionary Daughters of the Most Holy Mother of the Light, Missionaries evangelisers of the poor, just to mention a few offering information with leaflets, books, photographs, and videocassettes.
