Tuesday, 26 September 2017 youth   synodality

Accra (Agenzia Fides) - "In our Country today, there is a growing emphasis on prosperity, especially among the youth. Society basically says: the richer you are, the better off you are. That is pretty much true if you live by the standard of secular society", says Ghana’s First Deputy of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Speaker Joseph Osei-Owusu, at the first ever synod on youth and vocation in the Archdiocese of Accra and Ghana.
Rt. Hon. Speaker Hon. Osei-Owusu added that the quality of man’s life is not determined solely by the amount of wealth he amasses, but rather the honesty and the integrity with which he lives his life.
In his speech, he called on the youth to demonstrate the worth of their youthfulness by being an example to their fellow youth and believers in general, in all aspects of life, recalling that the Christian youth are confronted with a number of challenges including unemployment, which is driving many youth into social vices like armed robbery, internet fraud (sakawa), prostitution and pornography.
The Rt. Hon. Speaker added that Government’s effort at promoting entrepreneurship among the youth, is the surest way of empowering them and developing our nation. He acknowledged the fact that there are huge numbers of unemployed graduates among Ghanaian youth and called for the promoting of technical skills and entrepreneurship among the youth to empower themselves and create their own jobs and employment.
The President of Parliament was of the view that young Christians of our time are also challenged very early in their lives, with the exposure to television programmes, movies, social media and the internet. Much of the media is aligned against good morals and Christian values, posing a further challenge to evangelization.
The Synod has the theme “125 years of Catholic Mission in Accra: Renewing Our Commitment to Evangelization” had a participant strength of 70 youths. The synod was organized in line with the 15th Ordinary General Assembly of Bishops which has theme "Young People, the Faith, and Vocational Discernment" to be hosted in the Vatican City in October 2018.
