San José (Agenzia Fides) - A boat carrying emigrants from Africa and Mongolia sank on Friday 1 September in the waters off Northwest Costa Rica, resulting in one death and a child is missing, according to El Heraldo newspaper in Honduras. We do not know the exact number of immigrants who were on the ship which sank in Bahia Salinas, near the Nicaragua border in the Pacific, pointed out the Costa Rican Ministry of Public Security in the local newspaper La Nación.
According to the Coast Guard, 17 people from Mongolia and several African countries were rescued, while an adult died and a child is missing. A second nearby boat was carrying other 14 emigrants. According to some testimonies there were two human being traffickers who fled.
This tragic episode confirms that in recent months, people from Africa and Asia crossing Central America have increased to reach the United States of America, now we are talking about thousands of immigrants. A few days ago in Tegucigalpa, the Pastoral of Human Mobility, a body of the Catholic Church in Honduras, denounced that 727 people have disappeared since 1996 while traveling the country on their way to the United States.
The National Institute for Migration (INM) in Honduras has revealed that in 2016 the number of "undocumented" migrants has increased, 26,239 in all, from Haiti, DR Congo, Ghana, Somalia, Eritrea, Guinea, Cameroon, Nepal and Dominican Republic. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 04/09/2017)
